The series depicts animals placed on a heap composed of the industrial product derived from them. The cow is immersed in a lake of pure white milk, the chicken sits on a mountain of eggs, the goat is sinking in ricotta, a thick woollen blanket has been placed under the sheep and the pig is lying on a stack of bacon. In the background, we can see wallpaper in comforting and domestic pastel colours, representing an oasis to turn to in order to find some serenity.
With its powerful sense of irony, the Industrial Portraits series conveys a very clear message whose greatest clarification comes from the artist’s decision to use plastic animals, inanimate toys that lose their playful side and become the leading figures in a sharp critique: figures that, in their obvious silence, scream and demand attention. In her pictures Federica Cogo turns the spotlight onto an unbalanced relationship, on the loss of values and sensitivity among humans, who exploit animals for personal needs, unconcerned with their dignity as living beings. What emerges here is a humanity that pays no attention to animals, which have merely become products to be exploited in order to satisfy the needs that people themselves have created and imposed on their world, a place in which there is no room for animals or other forms of life unless they can be used to produce something.
Federica Cogo received her first award in 2008 when she won the Young Artist Prize from Fair Play S.r.l. The same year, she featured in the collective show Cosa guardi? at the prestigious Gran Guardia palace in Verona. After the first collective shows, she decided to participate in the Premio Celeste in 2012 and received the second prize. In 2013, she was one the protagonists of the PLAYTIME project, curated by Cecilia Freschini and presented firstly at the Zajia Lab // Beijing Project Space in Beijing, China and then at the Videoart Project Space in Milan, Italy. The same year she participated in the VII International Art Prize Laguna, curated by Igor Zanti, and was awarded a place in a residency program in the Caochangdi Art District, China. She also won the CO.CO.CO.13 (Como Contemporary Contest 2013) and rapresented Italy at the European Biennial JCE Jeune Création Européenne. In 2014 G.A.I. - Associazione Circuito Giovani Artisti Italiani selected Cogo to take part in Giovane Fotografia Italiana #03, a contest for young Italian photographers. On this occasion she had her work shown at Fotografia Europea, in Reggio Emilia. The same year, her work was also exhibited at Art Verona and The Others (Turin). In 2015, she was awarded twice at Who Art You?, winning both the Special Proize D’Ars and the Premio Art Pour L’Art. Federica Cogo currently lives and works in Verona.
