Rori Palazzo’s fascination with Wunderkammers, or cabinets of curiosities, derives not only from her studies at the Abadir Academy of Fine Arts and Restoration at San Martino delle Scale, but also her approach to photography as an expressive language that can create dreamlike and vaguely surrealistic images, as if they were suspended in a dream and can thus shift between the immanent and the transcendent. Others’ realities are brought to the surface to re-emerge in a sort of “other” reality, which lives exclusively in that space, in that instant.
After studying paper restoration, Rori Palazzo specialized in digital promotional cinema. From the start, her education focused on photography as an expressive language to create dreamlike and surreal images. In 2009 Boalab, based in Palermo, staged her first solo exhibition. Since then, Palazzo has participated in numerous collective exhibitions, mainly in Italy, but she has also shown her work abroad, including the show in Düsseldorf at the Kunst im Hafen (Die Form des Wassers, 2013). In 2012 she was one of the finalists for the Combat Prize at the Museo Civico Giovanni Fattori and participated in Centro/Periferia, the prize organized by Federculture at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni (Spazio Fontana, Rome), and the Advisory Committee gave her the award.
In 2012–13 she was assistant to the American photographer Deborah Tuberville for the Valentino FW 2012–2013 campaign. In 2013 she was featured in The sea in my land – Artisti dal Mediterraneo, the exhibition curated by Francesco Bonami and Emanuela Mazzonis at MAXXI – Museo nazionale delle arti del XXI secolo (Rome).
That year she was a leading figure at the MIA Fair, participating in the BNL Paribas Photo Contest, where she won the top prize. A finalist in the Arte Laguna Prize 2013, she received the Special Prize Art Gallery at the Arsenale in Venice. In 2013 she also presented the Dream series in Naples, in a solo show of her works. In 2014 her works were featured in Corpi solitari. Autoscatti contemporanei, an exhibition curated by Giorgio Bonomi (Palazzo Trigona, Noto). Palazzo lives and works in Palermo.
