The work plays on the contrast and explosion of colour created between a frosty landscape and the bright, fiery hues of the animals that populate it. The photo was taken in Swedish Lapland from the artist’s hut when the weather was –28°C. The bullfinch, the subject of the photo and the symbol of good luck, is common even in the north of the Arctic Circle. The male presents very colourful plumage that stands out against the dazzling whiteness of the snow, whereas the female is a very delicate dove grey.
Edoardo Miola has always cultivated a passion for travel. After touring Europe, he went to Asia, visited Iran and Afghanistan, got to know North Africa, the Arab countries and Indochina, and was enchanted by Australia. Every trip is an opportunity for sophisticated photographic documentation of the landscapes and populations that animate the world. He first exhibited his photographs in 2011, in Sweden, at Galleri 1 in Skelleftea. In 2012 at the Palazzo Rosso (Genoa) Miola exhibited – and curated – Deja Vu – Soi Cowboy, a series of photographs inspired by his trip to Bangkok with his teachers, Steve McCurry and Mike Yamashita. The exhibition was then proposed in the spaces of the Paola Meliga art gallery in Turin, which in 2014 also hosted his solo show Petit Royaume: Mustang Nepal Fotografie di un viaggio d’autore in piccolo formato. In 2013 he won second prize for Communication Photography in the Nikon Photo Contest 2012–2013. That year, he also participated with the Satura Art Gallery at the International Furniture and Design Fair in Milan. In 2015 he participated in MIA – Milan Image Art Fair with a personal stand and won the “My LifeStyle” award. In his past work as an architect Miola focused on creating and producing prototypes and design objects, collaborating with the best-known architects on the international scene. He currently lives between Italy, Sweden and South Africa.
