Gianna Carrano entrusts this picture with all the power of the interplay of opposites, an interior clash with one’s self, in which no mediation is possible. I duellanti – the duellers – doesn’t tell a story. It is an image that illustrates the constant engagement of yin and yang present in each of us, so similar yet so opposite, and it reminds us of the fact that this struggle is profound, inevitable and overwhelming. The thread, the only note of colour, draws our attention and distributes it between two competitors.
Gianna Carrano lives and works between Milan and Barcelona. She started her career as a photographer in 2009, when some of her shots were exhibited at the FuoriSalone in Milan. She also participated in Milano Photo Festival in both 2011 and 2013. At the same time, her works featured in BRERART and in collective shows staged at La Torre gallery, Fabbrica EOS and Spazio Kryptos Gallery. After showing in Milan, in 2014 she participated in the Fierad’Arte Contemporanea in San Sebastian. Gianna Carrano’s work is characterised by the intensity of black&white, the nudity of her subjects and the attention to light and dark. In 2015, her photography series Abriendo puertas was shown at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, Barcelona. Besides working as a photographer, Gianna Carrano is also a journalist at the online magazine Coolmag. As such, she has published several books on great artists such as Aldo Mondino, Maurizio Cattelan and Mimmo Rotella, curating both text and images.
