A long hallway is imbued with a dreamlike atmosphere in which reveries and visions – sometimes hallucinations, sometimes repressed desires – are protected by this group of swan geese. These elegant animals owe their name to their proud and regal behaviour that makes them resemble swans. They are the guardians of an inviolable and impassable place, the metaphor for the human unconscious. The geese’s long, graceful neck gives them an agile and haughty air, even as they exchange attentive gazes, ready to make their most characteristic cry at the first threat of danger, in order to defend the inviolability of a place rich in personal stories.
The countryside of the Langhe area serves as a backdrop for the Stanze series, set in abandoned and solitary places destroyed by time and neglect, yet fascinating and populated by animals that look like symbolic presences, alienating and surreal. The title of the series alludes to intimate and personal places, reminiscences that resurface in our memory.
Paolo Vergnano approaches photography with a love for the animal world, in keeping with his educational background: he is a biologist specializing in food and environmental microbiology. Biology and a love of nature distinguish his artistic research, expressed for the first time with the Stanze series. In 2012 he exhibited at the Oasis Photo Contest, the International Prize for Nature Photography organized by the magazine Oasis. In 2014 he played a key role on the art scenes of Turin and Milan. In Turin Vergnano exhibited as part of the Photissima Prize and participated in the Others Art Fair Torino with the Paola Sosio Contemporary gallery; in Milan he took part in the Premio Arte 2014, exhibiting in the spaces of the Palazzo della Permanente and contributing to the auction organized by Christie’s at the GAM for the non-profit Comunità Nuova. That year he also participated in the 4th Rassegna di Arte Contemporanea, curated by Daniel Buso in the historic palace of Ca’ dei Carraresi (Treviso). Also in 2014, Vergnano was chosen by Patrizia Bottallo to participate in the collective exhibition Temporary Show IV, held at the Scrigno dell’arte in Monchiero (Cuneo). In 2015, Vergnano was acknowledged in the Top 40 of the Sony World Photography Awards, and with a photograph from the Stanze series he won the first edition of the Visions Collection, a competition organized by the Malamegi Lab Art Foundation.
