The stage on which the artists perform is often the stage of life, where the actors play themselves. In this shot, a lonely stage devoid of human presence is occupied by a piano and two violins set on the floor, waiting for someone to pick them up and play them, to recount their story in music. The use of black and white heightens the tension. Absence evokes presence, presence evokes absence. And thousands of ears wait for a melody in which to seek refuge, lose themselves and find an identity.
When he was 17, Pino Ninfa left Catania to move to Milan, where he specialized in photography and began to develop national and international projects tied to show business and photo-reporting. In 1995 he won first prize in “Le stagioni del Ritratto”, a photography competition organized by Kodak. The following year Canon Italia chose him as a photographer for jazz in Italy with an exhibition at the Arengario in Milan (1996). Two years later, in 1998, the magazine Leica selected his works on music and society. His interest in music and social issues converge in the overall meaning of his photographic work. Based on documentation of recovery plans for people in difficult situations and poor areas, he derived unprecedented photography projects destined for publication and photography exhibitions in Italy and abroad. He was a photographer at the Heineken Jammin’ Festival from 1998 to 2012 and at numerous Italian jazz festivals; for Heineken Italia he followed various years of Umbria Jazz. In 2008 he participated in Padova Jazz Festival 1998–2007, showing photographs covering the ten years of this important festival at an exhibition in Palazzo Moroni. For years, for the PIM Cultural Association (poetry, image, music), of which he is president, he has been conducting multimedia projects that promote the encounter between music and photography. Ninfa has been featured several times at Genoa’s Palazzo Ducale: in 2011 with the solo show Sulle Strade dell’Avventura, the following year with Storie Africane and then in 2013 with JazzGigs, a retrospective that covers twenty years of travels and experiences in the world of jazz. In 2014 the Carta Bianca gallery devoted Round About Jazz to him, his first solo exhibition in his hometown. As an author, in 2012 he published a photo book devoted to the townships of South Africa, entitled Round About Township, which inspired the eponymous solo exhibition he inaugurated at the QR Photogallery in Bologna in 2015. Ninfa lives in Milan and, alongside his work as a photographer, for many years he has held workshops and seminars on photography.
